Words Worth Repeating #4: “Not everybody has a religion”

Not everybody has a religion, not even if they have faith in or are dedicated to something.

– If you believe in UFOs without evidence, aliens are not your religion

– If you’ve been convinced of theories based on empirical evidence and experimentation, science is not your religion

– If you’ve dedicated much of your life to sports, whether you’re a fan or a player, sports is not your religion

– If you don’t believe in a god, atheism is not your religion

It doesn’t matter how dedicated you are to something, or whether you have unproved faith in it…that doesn’t make something a religion.

Calling things such is a very frequent tactic made by theists as a way of making their critics shut up, a kind of, “Well, you do it too, hypocrite!” maneuver.

Stop that.
